Let's answer some questions!
What does "malty" mean?
Malts make beers sweet but depending on the grain used can change the color and weight of the beer. Malts include the richer flavors like caramel and coffee flavors in beer.
What does "hoppy" mean?
Hops are a flower used to create a bitter flavor in a beer to offset the sweetness. The stronger the hops flavor, the longer the hops were left in the beer barrels.
What are the two main types of beer?
Lagers have a crisp taste due to their fermentation process. They are fermented for longer at lower temperatures to create a smooth, mellow taste
The Brews: Pilsners (straw colored, highly carbonated), Oktoberfest (dark brown, full-bodied) Bock (sweet and dark), Dunkel (dark amber with smooth flavors, similar to coffee)
Ales are sweet and full-bodied beers that vary in color. Some will contain hops to counteract the sweetness factor with a little bit (or a lot, in the case of IPAS)
The Brews: Porter (dark and heavy), Stout (dark, roasted and sweet) Amber (sweet and amber colored), Irish Ale (deep red with malty, sweet flavors), Pale Ale (malty and hoppy with fruity undertones), Indian Pale Ales (extremely bitter and amber colored), Wheat (pale, highly carbonated and fruity)
